MICRON CONGRATULATES VIRGIN CUP CHAMP TOAL |
BJ Toal was officially crowned as 2007 champion of the Micron-supported Virgin Media Cup at Donington Park last Sunday. With the final round taking place at Brands Hatch on13-14 October, Toal now enjoys an unassailable lead in the chase for the title.
Despite crashing out of the second race at Donington on Sunday and not scoring any points, an ensuing red flag for ‘technical and climatic conditions' saw the race stopped at the half-way point and the race finishers awarded half-points in accordance with MCRCB regulations. This left Toal in a position whereby even a no-score at Brands Hatch would still give the Ulsterman the title by 0.5 points.
BJ Toal has led the title race since the first round at Donington Park back in April. With four race wins and seven podiums from 11 races, he has dominated the last ever Virgin Media R6 Cup and will now step up to the British Supersport championship for 2008. Toal becomes the fifth and final champion of perhaps the greatest domestic platform for developing young talented riders.
“The feeling is unreal,” said Toal afterwards, “I can’t believe that I’m the champion! It was only in the evening when we found out about the half-points that we started doing the sums, I had a good idea then that I’d done enough this season to claim the title.”
Micron’s brand manager, Arthur Macdonald, commented: “Congratulations to BJ! He thoroughly deserves his title after dominating the championship all season. The R6 Cup has been a remarkable championship and Micron is very proud to have been associated with its astounding success and the discovery of some remarkably talented riders.”
Editors’ note: Micron’s Hydroformed MotoGP-style end-can and Serpent pipework is the championship’s official control exhaust system.
